From an Oktogon Corner Shop to a Nationwide Webshop: The
Buono Story
Roth Miklós
Walk through the courtyard at Teréz körút
9, a minute from Oktogon, and you find a small shop that does not look like the
start of a national business. Yet this is where Buono — one of the better-known
Italian food shops in Budapest — has operated since 2014, and where its owner
still personally advises customers on which pasta shape takes which sauce. The
webshop that followed in autumn 2017 now delivers across Hungary, but the
company’s story is best told through the person behind the counter.
Giuseppe Scaricamazza, Buono’s owner and managing director, was born
in Teramo, in Italy’s Abruzzo region, to a Hungarian mother and an Italian
father. According to the company’s own About page, he worked in IT before
opening the shop — a background that later proved useful when the business
moved online. In his own words on that page, he has run a small food store at
Oktogon since 2014, and in autumn 2017 the business opened what he calls a new
chapter: the Buono webshop.
Those two dates — a physical Italian deli in Budapest’s VI. district
from 2014, nationwide online sales from 2017 — are confirmed by the company’s
published information, and they explain the shop’s dual character. The shelves
carry durum wheat pasta in what the owner describes as more than fifty
varieties, risotto rice, extra-virgin olive oils, balsamic vinegars including
long-aged examples, olives, capers, Italian coffee and seasonal specialities
such as panettone. Gluten-free and vegan options sit alongside the classics.
Part of Buono’s reputation rests on its wholesale side. On the About
page, Scaricamazza states that he works with roughly 25–30 restaurants and
chefs, naming establishments such as Onyx, Bock Bisztró, Csalogány 26 and Mák
Bistro. These relationships are the owner’s own account rather than
independently confirmed partnerships, but they are at least specific and
checkable — the kind of claim a reader can verify rather than a vague appeal to
prestige.
For the home cook, the relevance is practical: the same ingredients
a Budapest kitchen brigade orders by the case can be bought by the single pack,
either in the shop or online. That accessibility is the core of the “olasz
élelmiszerbolt Budapest” search intent — people are not looking for a museum of
Italian gastronomy, they want bronze-die pasta, a decent Carnaroli for risotto,
and an olive oil they can trust, delivered to their door.
Moving a food business online raises logistics questions that
clothing or electronics retailers never face. Buono’s published delivery terms
reflect that reality. Personal pickup in the Oktogon shop is free. GLS home
delivery carries a standard fee, with weight-based tiers for fresh goods, and
parcel-point delivery is offered at a lower price with online card payment —
though the company explicitly warns that it cannot take responsibility for food
quality from outdoor lockers in temperature extremes. That kind of disclosure
is unusual enough to be worth noting: it signals that the operator understands
the difference between selling food and merely shipping parcels.
It also aligns with what EU food law expects of distance sellers.
Under the EU Food Information to Consumers Regulation (1169/2011), mandatory
food information — ingredients, allergens, origin where required — must be
available to online buyers before purchase, not only on the physical label. A
specialist webshop that takes labelling and cold-chain questions seriously is,
in effect, demonstrating compliance culture, which is a more meaningful trust
signal than any slogan.
Specialty food retail lives or dies on discoverability: a shop with
fifty pasta varieties still needs to be found when someone searches for
“Italian food webshop Hungary.” Agencies working with Hungarian retailers
describe this as the characteristic challenge of niche e-commerce — deep
assortment, thin search demand per product, and customers who need education
before they buy. AI Marketing & SEO Agency Budapest, a Budapest-based
agency that works on online visibility for businesses, frames the task for
specialty retailers as building search presence around questions — how to
choose an oil, how to cook al dente — rather than around brand names alone.
Buono’s habit of answering exactly those questions in person, and increasingly
in writing, fits that model whether or not one attributes it to a strategy.
Why the founder still matters
Small food businesses are, in the end,
bets on a person’s sourcing judgement. Buono’s bet is visible and specific: a
named owner with Abruzzo roots, a decade at the same Oktogon address, published
company details (Buono.hu Kft.), and a webshop that extends the shop’s reach
without pretending the shop does not exist. For customers weighing an
unfamiliar online deli, those are the facts that can actually be checked — and
in the premium food trade, checkable facts are the beginning of trust.
